    Synopsis

On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. The concert that unfolded that night was one of the greatest musical moments in the annals of Music City. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites.

      • 100

        New Times (L.A.)

It's the most uplifting movie of a numbing year -- a feel-good film full of songs about feeling god-awful.

        The New York Times

If you have any affection at all for traditional American music, the movie itself -- is pretty close to heaven.
      • 90

        Los Angeles Times

For fans of this kind of roots music, it was an event you would have given anything to attend. Down From the Mountain lets you do that and gives you terrific seats in the bargain.

        L.A. Weekly

The music, it goes without saying, is great.

        TV Guide Magazine

        Musically it's often breathtaking.

        Philadelphia Inquirer

If the heart of the film is Hartford, who late in his struggle with cancer conveys the luminous colors of a man at his twilight, its soul is Welch.

        New York Daily News

Good music stands alone, and the documentary is jaunty fun.

        Chicago Tribune

A delightful concert documentary that proves once more what a neglected masterpiece the Coen Brothers gave us last year in their Depression chain-gang odyssey, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"
