Sallie Gardner at a Gallop

    Sallie Gardner at a Gallop
    1878

    Synopsis

One of the earliest moving picture experiments, created by photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Using a sequence of 24 photographs of the horse Sallie Gardner, ridden by jockey Gilbert Domm, Muybridge captured the animal in motion at Stanford’s Palo Alto Stock Farm. The experiment proved that all four of a horse’s hooves leave the ground during a gallop, making it a landmark in the development of cinema.
