Mirlande Amazan was born in Haiti (of Syrian and Cuban descent) and came to the United States at the age of three, when her family moved to New York City.

Initially a psychotherapist, Mirlande enjoyed a long career in mental health across various organizations, quickly becoming a director in her field.
