When a wandering mercenary named Hogan rescues a nun called Sister Sara from the unwanted attentions of a band of rogues on the Mexican plains, he has no idea what he has let himself in for. The New York Times
I'm not sure that it is a great movie, but it is very good, and it stays and grows in the mind the way only movies of exceptional narrative intelligence do. - 70
Time Out
Siegel devotees will find much to enjoy in the languid but not unexciting story by Budd Boetticher. - 63
Chicago Sun-Times
A step or two above the usual Clint Eastwood Western. - 50
Variety
Two Mules for Sister Sara might have worked. But with Clint Eastwood as one of the mules, an American mercenary looking for a fast peso in old French-occupied Mexico, Shirley MacLaine as a scarlet sister disguised in a nun's habit, and Don Siegel's by-the-old-book direction, it doesn't. - 50
TV Guide Magazine
This western almost makes the grade as high-quality moviemaking, but just never quite gets there.
