Time Out
What makes the film is essentially the character of Coffy as played by Pam Grier with increasing alienation: a nurse out to get the men who are responsible for her little sister's addiction, she makes a conscious decision to manipulate the sexual situations which the men around her force her to engage in. It is a performance that defies and subverts the genre. - 75
TV Guide Magazine
If you're looking for nonstop, no-holds-barred exploitation, look no further. Pam Grier's first solo starring role is an enormously entertaining black action classic. - 75
Chicago Tribune
Set the standard for the black woman (Pam Grier) as the aggressor in motion pictures. [04 May 2012, p.C3] - 70
Chicago Reader
Jack Hill directs for maximal suspense, violence, and voyeuristic appeal (which Grier certainly embodies). - 70
Variety
Jack Hill, who wrote and directs with an action-atuned hand, inserts plenty of realism in footage in which Pam Grier in title role ably acquits herself. - 70
The Dissolve
A sobering story kept at street level. - 60
CineVue
Like many of the films from that era, Coffy hasn’t aged particularly well, but it’s still an entertaining snapshot of the shifting sociological changes of that time wrapped up in crowd- pleasing B-movie. - 50
Chicago Sun-Times
Coffy is slightly more serious and a little more inventive than it needs to be.
