New York Post
This is grim, bleak material that at times is monotonous, but its woe feels authentic. - 60
The Hollywood Reporter
Yelling to the Sky drips with a strange but sometimes moving nostalgia for environs its characters clearly want to escape. - 60
New York Daily News
Yelling is a prosaic look at a hard life. Like Sweetness, the movie finds its way by instinct. - 50
Slant Magazine
The film avoids most of its genre's pratfalls, though it also shows little interest in transcending them. - 50
Variety
Strong on texture but taxingly light on narrative. - 50
NPR
Perhaps the clearest evidence that Yelling to the Sky is based on Mahoney's own life is that the movie lets its most troubled characters off pretty easy. - 50
The New York Times
It's disconcerting to watch Sweetness, tiny and light-skinned, assaulting Latonya, large and dark-skinned, partly because it bluntly if inconclusively underscores a crucial color divide that runs through this film like a throbbing vein. - 40
Village Voice
Little more than a résumé film for all involved, it certainly feels more Park City than Bushwick.
