The whole therefore hinges upon Fishback’s performance and she assuredly carries it upon her shoulders. - 91
The Playlist
Aside from its phenomenal script and performances, Night Comes On delights with stunning visuals. - 90
Variety
Night Comes On is, true to its title, blanketed in a dim, crepuscular state of waiting. Fishback, her film career unfurling clearly before her from scene to scene, blazes a way out of it. - 90
Los Angeles Times
Like its determined heroine, Night Comes On burns with a smoldering fire, a heat that is no less intense, no less effective, for remaining largely beneath the surface. - 83
IndieWire
It’s a tough story, but told through a decidedly female gaze, Night Comes On blossoms into something beautiful. - 80
The Hollywood Reporter
Restrained, affecting and tenderly observed with a distinctly female gaze, the film takes some time to locate its center as an intimate drama of resilient sisterhood. But the delicacy of the bond etched between Fishback's Angel and her 10-year-old sibling, played by captivating discovery Tatum Marilyn Hall, keeps you hooked into this melancholy but hopeful story of fractured family dynamics. - 80
The New York Times
The actress Jordana Spiro directed Night Comes On and wrote the script with Angelica Nwandu, a spoken-word poet and creator of the incisive gossip website The Shade Room. Ms. Nwandu is also a former client of the foster care system. The result of their partnership is a film that balances penetrating clarity with compassion. - 75
Philadelphia Daily News
Night Comes On isn’t a docudrama, but it’s informed enough to give us a sense of the obstacles facing young women like Angel.
